"Thought Withdrawal" is a time based installation meant to serve as a Form Constant/Hypnagogic interpretation through video and sound synthesis. While the video installation was built before arriving at the gallery, the sound installation was generated on site. the notion of creating a site specific work was key in the investigation of the relationship of space to the visual/auditory work. On February 20th, 2016 LAND AND SEA had the pleasure of hosting Robert at our project space in Oakland California. The gallery hours leading up to Robert’s live performance were serene and meditative. A patch was created on his modular synthesizer that accompany a looped video projection comprised of synthesized, lush, amorphic color blobs and blends easing in and out from one another. Time and perception shifted. The live performance was stunning, and inspired us to make this record. The sound piece in several parts, is meant to interact with the video installation in an intuitive way. as there is no hard sync between the two components, yet there exists an illusion of firm synchronicity between them. the sound also provides an illusion of acoustic instrumentation, yet it is only a series of voltages moved and manipulated to induce another illusory element.

Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe (b. 1975) is an artist and composer that works with voice in the realm of spontaneous music often under the moniker of Lichens. Most recently, creating patch pieces with modular synthesizer and tonal vocal work has been a focus of live performance and recordings. The marriage of synthesis and the voice has allowed for a heightened physicality in the way of ecstatic music, both in a live setting and recorded. The sensitivity of analogue modular systems echoes the organic nature of vocal expression which in this case is meant to put forth a trancelike state. Through collaboration Robert has worked with Ben Russell, Ben Rivers, Sabrina Ratté, Rose Lazar, Nicolas Becker, Jóhann Jóhannsson, Tarek Atoui, Philippe Parreno, Evan Calder Williams, Ariel Kalma, Lucky Dragons, Alexandra Wolkowicz, Biba Bell, ADULT, Doug Aitken, and Rose Kallal, as well as many others.
